What is Big Bang Theory?

The Big Bang theory is the prevailing scientific model for the origin and evolution of the universe. It posits that the universe began approximately 13.8 billion years ago from an extremely hot, dense, and energetic state known as a singularity. From this initial point, the universe underwent a rapid expansion and cooling, a process that continues to this day. In the first few moments after the Big Bang, the fundamental forces of nature and the elementary particles were formed. As the universe cooled, protons and neutrons combined to form the first atomic nuclei, primarily hydrogen and helium. After about 380,000 years, the universe had cooled enough for electrons to combine with these nuclei, forming the first atoms. This event, known as recombination, allowed light to travel freely through space for the first time, creating the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation that we can still detect today.

Where did the term "Big Bang Theory" come from?

The foundations of the Big Bang theory were laid in the early 20th century with Albert Einstein's theory of general relativity, which suggested that the universe could be expanding or contracting. In the 1920s, astronomer Edwin Hubble's observations of distant galaxies showed that they were moving away from us, providing the first direct evidence for an expanding universe. This led Belgian priest and physicist Georges LemaƮtre to propose in 1927 that the universe had originated from a single, primordial 'atom.' The theory gained further support in 1965 with the accidental discovery of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) by Arno Penzias and Robert Wilson, which was a key prediction of the Big Bang model. Over the years, numerous other observations, such as the abundance of light elements in the universe and the large-scale structure of galaxies, have provided further evidence for the theory.
